Concept

Affordable, Customizable, and Captivating

The Organic Foil Lamp was conceived as an organic floor lamp with the character of a sculptural light object. By using RGB GU10 bulbs, it creates mesmerizing light and shadow effects, while the illuminated, translucent shade adds warmth and atmosphere to any space.

Beyond its visual impact, the lamp was designed to be affordable, easy to customize, and compact enough to fit into a small gift box—ideal for efficient dropshipping and global distribution.

Solution

Using a punched PP foil sheet, a small packaging, variable design patterns and reasonable production cost are achieved.

By interlocking the ends of the foil in a puzzle-like manner, a cylindrical lampshade can be assembled from a compact, rolled-up foil sheet. Plastic caps at the top and bottom add structural stability. Light passes through the punched holes, casting decorative patterns into the surrounding space, while the translucent foil creates a soft, ambient glow.

The design of the perforations can be easily customized, as the punching tools are cost-effective.
The foil lamp become very successful, still offered in this fast paced market - and copied by the competitors.

Pattern Creation

From Plant Cells to Parametric Design

Beyond the lamp’s construction, developing the right pattern was crucial—it gives the lamp its unique character and was essential to its success. Inspired by organic patterns found in nature, the challenge was to translate these forms into a lampshade that creates the perfect light effect. After thorough research, plant cells served as the primary inspiration. This concept was then refined and iterated to achieve the ideal shape.

Using Grasshopper, a parametric Voronoi pattern was generated with a falloff effect: smaller cells at the bottom gradually growing larger toward the top. Multiple paper models helped fine-tune the design before it was optimized for the punching process. After launching the original lamp featuring this organic pattern, several additional patterns were developed for future product expansions.
